The Beginning of Ride Like a Girl!

Welcome to the very beginning of our journey!

Hello friends! My name is Jo Peper. When I first touched a mountain bike at just 6 years old, I had no idea how profoundly that moment would reshape my entire life. In the seventh grade, I joined my local school’s team and believe it or not, I was the ONLY girl in my ride group! While the boys in my ride group were supportive ride buddies, I was missing the unique companionship that comes from riding alongside other women. Fast forward to today, at 17, and I’ve witnessed a beautiful transformation in the mountain biking community. More women are discovering the sport, breaking barriers, and challenging long-standing stereotypes. But I know we’re just scratching the surface of what’s possible. That’s why I created Ride Like a Girl.

Breaking Barriers

I keep thinking about all the amazing women who might love this sport but feel intimidated to try it. My mission is to dismantle these barriers, one pedal stroke at a time. Mountain biking changed my life and I want to create a space where other women can discover that same joy and freedom. Ride Like a Girl isn’t just another bike club – it’s a movement. Through monthly group rides, private coaching sessions, and an inclusive community approach, I want to break down the barriers that keep women away from mountain biking. I want to challenge the fears that I, as well as other female riders, have felt. This includes, but isn’t limited to: fear of injury, lack of technical knowledge, and feeling out of place in a male-dominated sport.

Our approach

The monthly group rides are the heart of this program. Riders of all skill levels will get to come together to tackle trails, share tips, and build confidence. There’s something really special about watching a nervous beginner become a confident rider. When you’re surrounded by other women who are learning and growing alongside you, the intimidation factor just melts away. Personalized Coaching

Private Coaching

My private coaching sessions are tailored experiences. Drawing from years of personal riding and coaching experience, I create individualized learning paths. Whether you’re learning basic bike handling or tackling advanced technical features, the focus is always on your personal growth and comfort. Here is me coaching for the first time ever! (I’ve learned a lot since then, don’t worry!)

The Vision Beyond Riding

I am hoping to grow a community from this. I want to get involved with local bike shops and see if there are opportunities to offer women-specific gear and maintenance workshops in partnership with Ride Like a Girl. I want to challenge the stereotypes about what it means to be a female mountain biker. I believe women can be competitive while celebrating our authentic selves, rock our awesome jewelry, embrace our femininity while getting muddy, and be both fierce and feminine.

I want Ride Like a Girl’s offerings to include mechanical workshops, adventure rides, and mentorship programs for all, but especially young girls who are wanting to or are competing in the sport. I also want to develop partnerships with local schools to introduce mountain biking to female students and encourage female athletes.

This Isn’t Just About Riding Bikes

– it’s about changing the face of mountain biking, one trail at a time. We’re building a community where women support women, where femininity and athleticism coexist, and where every rider finds her place on the trail. Together, I want to create the mountain biking community I wish I’d had when I started. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced rider, there’s a place for you here.
